In pre-0.50 DF, you could edit the init.txt file to use a tileset with square (or any other resolution) tiles instead of standard 4*3. 0.50 still has the 16x16 version of the standart tileset, but using it makes the game unplayable since there seems to be no support for non-4*3 tiles.
